Philam Foundation
Philam Foundation was established in 1997 as the social
development arm of the Philam Group of Companies. The Foundation
epitomizes the Group's commitment to good corporate citizenship
and social responsibility by harnessing the resources of the different
affiliates for projects that serve the less privileged in society.
The Foundation has released almost P25 million (US$550,000)
since 1997 under its four major program areas of Health,
Education, Arts and culture and Livelihood development (HEAL).
It established the Philam Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), now
known as The GoodWell Fund, in order to assist livelihood projects
that have proven successful and are up for replication or expansion.
The Foundation to date has assisted ten non-government
organizations engaged in a wide array of livelihood initiatives from
microfinance to aqua-culture. The GoodWell Fund has released
almost P15 million (US$300,000) and has benefited over two
thousand households.
The Foundation, in partnership with the Philippine Business for
Social Progress (PBSP), established the Aid for Basilan Children
Fund (ABC Fund), a scholarship fund for over 500 Muslim and
Christian schoolchildren in the strife-torn province of Basilan.
The Philam Group has also forged a partnership with Gawad Kalinga
(GK), a local non-governmental organization, which aims to build
communities in depressed areas. The Philam Group and AIG have
pledged to build 200 houses in three communities: Philam GK
Village in Sitio Ruby, Quezon City, Philam GK Village in Bulalacao,
Oriental Mindoro, and the AIG Philam GK Village in Hinunangan,
Southern Leyte. AIG donated US$200,000 for the support of the
victims of the landslide tragedy that devastated the town of Saint
Bernard, Southern Leyte in early 2006.
We are a major sponsor of Relay for Life, the signature fundraising
event of the Philippine Cancer Society. It is an overnight event
designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research
and programs of the Philippine Cancer Society.
The Philam Group supports the Department of Education's
Adopt-a-School program, a multi-sectoral partnership which aims
to provide much needed assistance and service to public schools.
The Adopt-A-School Program is a pro-poor movement that will help
ensure access to quality education for the Filipino youth.
We have sponsored the Promote English Proficiency (PEP) initiative
of the American Chamber of Commerce and the Makati Business
Club. The Philam Life-PEP program hopes to address the problem
of declining English proficiency among Filipinos and preserve the
country's competitive advantage in the global workforce. Under the
program, 6,600 teachers and students from six universities across
the country will be trained through computer-aided English language
instruction.
