Sharing a common vision to help people cope with the rapidly rising
cost of medical care in the country, a group of doctors decided to
pool their talents and resources to organize the PHILIPPINE HEALTH
SYSTEMS, INC. (PHS) in February 1982.
In the beginning,
PHS clientele was composed only of corporate accounts. The arrangement
was for PHS to provide medical services for these companies' employees.
Services offered then were limited to out-patient type like consultations,
annual medical examinations, pre-employment medical examinations,
limited laboratory and x-ray procedures.
As months passed,
the companies started clamoring for more PHS services. The founding
doctors, realizing the viability of their endeavor, thought that
the time was ripe to put up a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO),
a concept that was relatively new in the local market. This move
was envisioned to benefit more people, a welcome alternative for
a great majority of people who could otherwise not enjoy high quality
services without having to worry about the immediate expenses involved.
PHS doctors,
however, were not naive to the reality that embarking on an HMO
scheme would entail a lot of manpower and other resources. Three
considerations immediately came to mind: first was the source of
badly needed additional capital; second, the needed management skills
and adequate administrative support; and third, a dynamic marketing
force to push a new brand of service in the market.
At first, the
task of searching for a partner to back PHS seemed formidable. But
the answer was not that elusive. The doctors were soon in agreement
that there was one institution which could effectively get their
plans off the ground - the Philippine American Life Insurance Company
(Philamlife). Negotiation for a partnership started immediately.
PHILAMCARE HEALTH SYSTEMS, INC. (PHILAMCARE) thus came to be, with
the objective of meeting the public's health care needs at affordable
costs without sacrificing the quality of service. In time, PhilamCare
tapped the expertise more than 3,500 specialists, most of whom are
diplomats in their respective fields. It has also affiliated with
22 of the better equipped hospitals in Metro Manila and 123 hospitals
in key cities nationwide.
PhilamCare also
boasts of its partnership with UnitedHealthCare (UHC) a leading
managed care organization in the United States. PhilamCare, essentially,
is a multi-service Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) with the
primary aim of providing preventive and curative health care services
as well as hospitalization benefits at an affordable price to Filipinos
of all income classes through its wide range of product lines.
PhilamCare belongs
to the Philippine`s Top 1000 Corporations, with a membership of
over 306,000 individuals, a roster of over 750 corporate clients,
and a nationwide network of premier hospitals in Metro Manila and
key urban centers. Lately, its reach has extended overseas, wherever
Filipino communities require its array of diversified health care
services for their dependents left in the Philippines.
